Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur decide to pursue Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni instead of Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci

Tottenham Hotspur are pushing to sign Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni instead of Leonardo Bonucci, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes via TuttoJuve (h/t Football.London).

The Lilywhites have recently been linked with the Juventus legend, but it seems that they have dropped their interest in Bonucci and are pursuing a younger option instead. Bonucci is 35 years old and is in the final few years of his playing career.

While he would bring experience and leadership wherever he goes, he cannot offer long-term security. One could argue that Spurs need both – Bonucci’s experience and Bastoni’s youth.

The latter is 23 years old and fast becoming one of Serie A’s most coveted centre-backs. At his age, he will only get better and under a world-class Italian manager like Antonio Conte, Bastoni’s ceilings will know no bounds.

Spurs tried to bolster their defence this summer but failed to do so to some extent. Clement Lenglet’s loan arrival from Barcelona was met with Joe Rodon’s temporary departure to Stade de Rennais.

The Frenchman admitted that there is no buy option in his contract at Spurs but he could consider his long-term future at Tottenham if the situation is conducive to it. However, Lenglet may not be the best option.

He is good but is he world-class? Many will tell you that he probably isn’t. Miguel Almiron left the former Sevilla man for dead when he scored for Newcastle United in their 2-1 win at N17 this weekend.

It was just a simple reminder that Spurs would perhaps be wise to target world-class options instead of stop-gap signings. Bastoni is certainly a player that will please many Spurs fans but it remains to be seen if Inter will be open to selling one of their most prized assets to us.
