Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Hotspur have no shot at landing Alessandro Bastoni in the January transfer window
Speaking on CBS’s House of Champions show on Youtube, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have no chance of signing Alessandro Bastoni in the January transfer window.
The Italian has been an exemplary performer for Inter Milan on the left side of their back three. Signed in 2017 from Atalanta, Bastoni spent the first two years at the Giuseppe Meazza out on loan.
It was only after Conte’s arrival at the Milan giants that the player got his opportunity to impress for the Nerazzurri. The 23-year-old has since developed into a first XI player and played a crucial role in Inter’s 2020-21 Scudetto-winning campaign.
Conte appears to have a high opinion of the defender and was keen on signing him last summer. Given that the Italian tactician favours a three-at-the-back system, it is imperative that the rearguard is as impenetrable so as to permit the wing-backs to provide depth.
Despite missing out in the summer, Tottenham retain their interest in Bastoni. However, the chances of landing him in January are close to non-existent. Romano confirms the same and went on to add that Inter’s qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League has also played its role in the situation.
“Not for January. Bastoni in January is staying, because for Inter he’s a key player, they are going to play the next stage of Champions League, so he’s not leaving.”
It is not all doom and gloom as Romano goes on to add that an approach could be made next summer for Bastoni’s services. A lot could however depend on whether Antonio Conte will commit his future at the N-17.
“In the summer, we will see. It depends on Antonio [Conte], if Antonio will still be there, it depends on Inter’s strategy. It’s too early to say, but in January nothing will happen for Bastoni.”
Conte’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, and despite there being the option of an extension, his long-term future is still up in the air.
The 53-year-old has not spent more than two years at a club, with the three-year spell from 2011-14 at Juventus the only exception. Tottenham are currently in touch with the Italian regarding a new deal and remain optimistic about their chances.
