Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane to be bestowed with Freedom of the City of London after FIFA World Cup

Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane will be awarded the freedom of the city of London in January after he leads England to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Kane has spent his entire professional career on Spurs’ books. The 29-year-old is already a living legend for both club and country and is set to captain England at the World Cup.

He is two goals short of Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals for England. Kane is also the third all-time leading goal-scorer in the history of the Premier League with 193 goals to his name.

Given his age, he has ample time to overtake Alan Shearer’s record of 260 goals in the competition. Kane has come to be associated with Spurs and is truly a legend in north London and England.

After the news broke that he will be awarded the freedom of the city of London in the coming months, Kane said (h/t the BBC):

“[It is] a proud moment for myself and my family. It is a real honour to be recognised by the city I grew up in and love.”

The Tottenham Hotspur striker was nominated for the award by the corporation’s policy chairman Chris Hayward and his deputy, Keith Bottomley. Kane is on a contract that expires in the summer of 2024.

For the time being, it is said that Kane has postponed any thoughts about extending his deal at N17 until after the World Cup. The competition commences on 20 November and ends on 18 December.

Currently, he has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, who lost Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona this summer. However, if he doesn’t renew his deal at Spurs, the number of potential suitors would naturally increase.
