Tottenham star Tanguy Ndombele could make France’s World Cup squad after Paul Pogba injury
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele could be a surprise inclusion in manager Didier Deschamps’ FIFA World Cup squad in November, as per L’Equipe (h/t the Express)
Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup with an injury while N’Golo Kante also looks set to miss the showpiece event in Qatar with a fitness issue.
This could mean that Ndombele gets a surprise call-up to Les Bleus’ squad. He was loaned to Napoli this summer on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.
He has truly failed to impress at Spurs under several managers including Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and now, Antonio Conte. However, it seems that he has found form in Naples.
Brilliant chance for Ndombele
The Frenchman has featured in 15 games across competitions for the Italian side this season, scoring once and assisting another. He hasn’t been a pinned starter for manager Luciano Spalletti but he has looked good whenever he has been on the field.
His work rate off the ball left a lot to be desired when he was at Spurs. But his quality on the ball – especially his ball control and dribbling – made him a tough man to dispossess in midfield.
It’s unlikely that he will be a starter for France but to even make the final 26-man squad will be a milestone achievement for the 25-year-old central midfielder.
He has won just seven senior caps for Les Bleus to date. His last appearance for them came in a 2-0 win against Kazakhstan on 28th March 2021.
