Harry Kane and Eric Dier represent Tottenham Hotspur in England’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad
No surprises as Harry Kane and Eric Dier of Tottenham Hotspur have been included in England’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.
Kane is expected to wear the armband for the Three Lions in Qatar while Dier could start in manager Gareth Southgate’s back-three. Dier had a spell where he was out of the England squad for a while.
However, he was restored to the first-team picture in September this year for the UEFA Nations League clashes against Germany and Italy. It is clear that his good form at Spurs at the start of the season aided his causes.
The entire England squad, as visible in the tweet above from the official England Twitter account, has a few surprises. Fikayo Tomori, despite his decent showing with AC Milan, is left out.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is in after Reece James’ injury ruled the Chelsea defender out of the tournament. James Maddison of Leicester City – a notable summer target for Spurs – also makes the club.
Ryan Sessegnon would have perhaps thought he stood an outside chance after Luke Shaw’s banal displays at Manchester United under manager Erik ten Hag. But he expectedly doesn’t make the cut.
Kane finished as the top-scorer in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where England were eliminated in the semi-final against Croatia. He would hope to go at least one step better this time and make the final.
England’s World Cup journey starts on 21 November against Iran before they take on the United States of America and Wales in their other two group-stage matches.
