Gareth Southgate offers update on Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane’s fitness ahead of England vs USA
Speaking in the press conference ahead of England’s second World Cup game against the USA later today as quoted by the Telegraph (Subscription Required), England manager Gareth Southgate has offered an update on the fitness of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.
Harry Kane who suffered a heavy challenge in the game against Iran was taken off as a precautionary measure and was later seen with a heavily strapped ankle after the game had ended.
The English international underwent scans on his ankle but he seems to be fine, at least according to the assessment of his manager Southgate. The English manager all but confirmed that Kane will start against the USA tonight.
Southgate went on to claim that he agreed with Spurs manager Antonio Conte’s claims that the English striker was in one of the best phases of his career and revealed that they managed his workload this week whilst training.
“Yeah, absolutely. He’s good, he’s worked and good for the game. We just checked him out just to see. Definitely. We managed him a little bit last week through training because of the load he had had so I think we’re always conscious of that and we do that with lots of players really”
One can’t begin to explain the importance that Kane carries in this England team. He is one of their main goalscoring outlets and the Tottenham man is excellent with his creativity as well.
As ridiculous as this sounds, the biggest positive for England from the game against Iran would have been the fact that the Three Lions managed to put in six goals past the goalie and not one of them coming from Kane’s boots.
It has been a worrying area of concern for England that despite the abundance of quality that they possess as a squad, they have always not scored enough goals to justify it but that notion could change this World Cup.
It would be nice for Harry Kane to get a goal from a Tottenham perspective but the important thing for the player would be that his side continues winning and there is no doubt that Kane will be looking to help his team in that regard today.
