Tottenham Hotspur willing to meet Napoli defender Kim Min-jae’s release clause
Football.London state that there are ‘reports that suggest’ Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to meet South Korea and Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae’s £43m release clause.
Kim Min-jae joined Napoli this summer amidst interest from Spurs. Now, the Lilywhites are still said to be keeping tabs on him as he represents his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Football-Italia (h/t Football.London), meanwhile, have claimed that Gli Azzurri are eager to offer him a new deal that removes the release clause. Given Kim just joined the Italian outfits this summer, it would be a surprise to see him change clubs so soon.
Napoli also would have signed him with the intention of strengthening their backline for a few more years, given Kalidou Koulibaly’s move to Chelsea in the summer. Spurs can really use a strong, tall defender like the South Korean.
What should Spurs do?
Some would even say that Kim’s defensive playing would suit our defence given Cristian Romero’s tendency to play on the front foot. It would also mean we will have the option to play three natural centre-backs in our backline.
Ever since manager Antonio Conte took over the managerial reins at the club, Ben Davies has been deployed as a left-sided centre-half. While he has rarely put a foot wrong, playing a natural centre-back offers more defensive rigidity and assurance.
That being said, Spurs should be careful with their interest in the South Korean star, who was a huge presence for his team in the 0-0 World Cup group-stage draw against Uruguay. Napoli will not want to lose him easily.

If the release clause stays active and isn’t eradicated, it wouldn’t do us any harm to try and sign him. Quality defenders come at a premium nowadays, and the 26-year-old is definitely one of them.
