Club News: Tam McManus urges Tottenham Hotspur to make ‘big’ defensive signings in January

Former Hibernian striker Tam McManus has urged Tottenham Hotspur to make ‘big’ defensive signings in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former striker gave his opinion on why the north London club should do so:

“Conte’s teams are usually so well-drilled and solid so you have to think that it is the players. Conte tried to fix it in the summer. I’m talking big signings. Top, top players who are going to come in and actually change things.”

“We know they have the money and Conte will want to see the ambition from the club. He has the ambition to win Tottenham trophies so the club needs to give him what he needs.

“They score loads of goals, the midfield has a load of depth. It’s only the defence. I don’t know who those players are but they are out there. If Spurs are serious this season then those players have to come in.”

Spurs signed Cristian Romero and Djed Spence this summer, with the former being a crucial part of Antonio Conte’s squad planning. They also bought Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona.

Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Romero have been the go-to defence for Conte this season, with Lenglet also putting in some shift whenever required. Despite having such quality defenders, our defence is the worst among the top eight clubs with 21 conceded so far.

While the quality players usually start, the substitutes Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga have not been able to provide tough competition to the regular players.

McManus is not wrong in his suggestion to bring in quality defenders at the back. While all our other departments are stacked with players, we really could do with some more additions at the back.

Lenglet was only a stop-gap signing for sure, given the nature of his deal. Ben Davies has been playing as a centre-back for far too long.

And the right-wing-back area, if it does fall in the category of our ‘defence’ per se, also needs strengthening. Djed Spence just hasn’t been trusted since coming in while Emerson Royal has been largely unconvincing.
