Transfer News: Gabby Agbonlahor backs Tottenham Hotspur to sell Emerson Royal
Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Tottenham Hotspur to sell right-back, Emerson Royal. Inter Milan are interested in the defender with Antonio Conte also open to allowing him to leave.
Emerson, who joined us in the summer of 2021 from Barcelona, has been a regular for the club since then. While he has had his moments, he has many a time shown that he is not good enough to start every game for a club like ours.
His lack of delivery in the final third of the pitch has been a problem for Conte’s side this season. Also, he has been lax many times in the defence too.
It is not surprising to see the coach being open to letting the defender leave. Now, former Villa striker Agbonlahor, while speaking to Football Insider has backed Spurs to get rid of the 23-year-old and also called him ‘useless’.
“Emerson Royal needs to go, he’s useless. If I was Spurs I would sell him, get as much money as you can for him now while you’re capable of getting a fee in. He’s just not been good enough for Spurs.”
Should the Brazilian depart, it would leave Matt Doherty and Djed Spence as the only choices in the right-back position. The former would likely start games for Conte, given that the manager does not trust the latter very much.
However, it will be wise for Spurs to get in a new right wing-back at the club. The north London club have been linked with a move for Inter and Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries in the past few weeks.
The 26-year-old has been exceptional for both club and country this season. A player with huge potential and experience under his belt, he would likely be an upgrade for Emerson.
The former Barcelona man just hasn’t been able to win over the fans here. It remains to be seen if any teams come to the fore for him in the near future, and if the Lilywhites are open to backing Conte and selling the Brazilian.
