Hugo Lloris gives honest reaction on Tottenham teammate Harry Kane’s miss for England vs France
Tottenham Hotspur teammates Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane faced each other in the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals when England took on France.
Aurelien Tchouameni fired Les Bleus into the lead with 17 minutes on the clock before Kane scored past his Spurs teammate from the penalty spot. Olivier Giroud seemingly sealed the win in the 78th minute with a brilliant header.
But three minutes later, England won another penalty. This time, Lloris, guessed right but the penalty was skied over the goalpost.
It was a victorious moment for Lloris and co., but a nightmare scenario for Kane and his teammates. The former Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper’s opinion on the miss was always going to be sought after the game, given his club allegiance with Kane.
After the game, he said (h/t Express):
“I want to be honest with you, with all the emotions, it’s a big match, it was a key moment. The man that I am have to be honest, we are team-mates, I respect him a lot. Kane took the responsibility at a key moment in the match.”
“Fortunately for the French team he missed. I know he is strong and he may not think about it for too long. I can share this moment of pain with him. I didn’t speak to Harry after the match.”
Whenever they do talk about it, it would perhaps be an awkward conversation. Now that Lloris has progressed, Spurs fans would not mind seeing him lift the World Cup once again and bring it to N17.
It was always going to be heartbreak for one of the two Tottenham stars when the draw was made. However, one wouldn’t have wished either one of Lloris or Kane to make a costly mistake.
