Clement Lenglet labels Tottenham Hotspur skipper Hugo Lloris a French legend
Tottenham Hotspur defender Clement Lenglet has labelled fellow countryman and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as a legend to all French people after guiding his country to a successive semi-final at the FIFA World Cup.
Lloris could create World Cup history by becoming the first player to captain his side to two tournament victories, after winning with Les Blues in 2018.
Alongside helping his team in reaching the semi-final by saving a crucial match-changing penalty from Harry Kane, he also became France’s all-time cap holder, surpassing Lillian Thuram’s record of 142 caps.
Lenglet, who is on loan at Tottenham Hotspur from FC Barcelona while speaking to the club’s official website, is all praise for his club and country captain and believes he is truly one of the best French players.
“To all French people, he’s a legend because he’s a very good person, a very good professional, an amazing goalkeeper. He’s one of the best players in the history of the French national team.
Hopefully, he’ll have two more caps at the World Cup. He can make history. It’s a long way yet, you have to think game by game, Morocco next, but as I said, it would be a big, big achievement for him.”
Lloris’s France has two more wins to game to be able to retain their title, after winning it in ecstatic fashion four years back.
Their semi-finals are a well-drilled Morocco side which is filled with talented players vying for their trade in top European leagues.
Hence, by no means it will be an easy game as was visible by Morocco’s eliminating tournament favourites Spain and Portugal in the knockout rounds.
Confidence will be high among the French squad after defeating an exciting English team but would need to deliver a much higher level of performance against Morocco if they wish to move to the next level.
Lloris has been a very able captain and has shown his leadership qualities over the years with both club and country and it would be delightful if he can bring the World Cup trophy back home.
