Matt Doherty expects Tottenham Hotspur will ‘rally around’ Harry Kane
Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty has said that the club and their players will ‘rally around’ England captain Harry Kane and help him to put the heartbreak of the World Cup behind him.
Kane skied his second penalty against France in the quarter-finals, after having scored the first to equalise the game earlier. His miss proved very costly as the Three Lions headed home after losing the game 2-1.
Now Doherty, while speaking in an in-house interview for Spurs (h/t Football. London), has said that the club will rally around the player and also claimed the 29-year-old is one the ‘strongest characters.’
“I thought England played well against France, to be fair, and France didn’t really get going. I feel like France had one attempt at goal and scored twice – the first wasn’t even a half-chance. England looked dangerous. Harry obviously scored the first penalty, and then everyone knows what happened.”
Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport. pic.twitter.com/lw5Esl4fnA

“That’s tough on him. These things happen. Pretty much everyone who knows ‘H’ would have put their house on him scoring, everyone knows he’s the best man for the job. It will be tough for him now but when he gets back in, we’ll rally around him and get him up and running again. He’ll be fine. He’s one of the strongest characters, mentally, that we all know.”
It was really a surprising moment to see one of the most reliable spot kick takers sky his shot above the bar in such a crucial moment. Nevertheless, football is a game of fine margins and Kane will look to move forward now.
But it is nice to see the players intend to come together to rally behind their striker. Such a gesture shows the high team spirit among the players and sends out the message that they have got each other’s back no matter what.
The 29-year-old has been in fine form for Spurs this season. The talisman has scored 12 goals in 15 league appearances so far and Antonio Conte will want his prolific striker to be clear from any thoughts as the north London club heads towards a very hectic second half to the season.
Meanwhile, Spurs and France captain Hugo Lloris will lead his side later today against Morocco in the semi-finals. On paper, the French are a superior team but the Atlas Mountains will not make it easy for them.
