Portsmouth boss claims “no suggestions” Tottenham Hotspur are looking to recall Dane Scarlett from loan
Danny Cowley, the manager of Portsmouth, has claimed that there are “no suggestions” Tottenham Hotspur are going to recall Dane Scarlett early from his loan spell.
The 18-year-old joined Pompey in the recent transfer window on a temporary move from Spurs. With the League One outfit, the forward has enjoyed regular first-team actions this season.
Speaking to The News (h/t football.london), Cowley, who took charge of Portsmouth last year, believes the North London side have no intention of cutting short Scarlett’s loan in January.
“It’s been pretty open (with Spurs). We speak daily if not weekly. These big clubs they have the necessary support mechanisms to help their young players and rightly so. We’ve got clear lines of communication.
“With 99 per cent of loan players there’s a recall. We understand why that is in place. But there is no suggestion they are looking to call him back.”
The 18-year-old has come up through the youth ranks at Tottenham and has shown exciting potential. He made his debut for Spurs in 2020 in a Europa League group stage fixture against Ludogorets Razgrad.
Against the Bulgarian outfit, the forward came on as a substitute to play the final few minutes of the game. We ended up winning the match 4-0.
In the previous campaign, Scarlett was a regular first-team squad member for the North London side. He featured eight times for us in all competitions but could not get on the scoresheet.
At Portsmouth this season, the 18-year-old has been impressive. The youngster has made 23 appearances in all competitions for the League One side. He has found the back of the net five times and provided two assists.
Tottenham signed a number of players in the summer of 2022. We bolstered our forward line with the addition of Richarlison. The Brazilian has made an impact whenever he has come off the bench.
