Destiny Udogie makes Premier League claim ahead of Tottenham Hotspur return from Udinese loan spell
Tottenham Hotspur sealed a move for Destiny Udogie from Udinese Calcio this summer before loaning him out to the Italian club for this season.
It was a smart move and eliminated any competition we may have faced for him in the following year before he could have moved to Spurs. The 20-year-old left-wing-back is enjoying his time in Udinese.
He has played in 11 Serie A games for the Black and White, scoring twice and providing one assist so far. Udogie knows what is lined up for him next – a move to Spurs.
It could promise to be a move that could turn out to be like Dejan Kulusevski’s – a youngster signed from Italy who became a staple in manager Antonio Conte’s first-team set-up.
Ready for the PL challenge?
Or, it could be identical to what Djed Spence is going through at the moment. The much-hyped young full-back was signed from Middlesbrough this summer but is yet to start a single league game for Spurs.
He still has a long way to go before the jury is out on his time at Tottenham, but it has been clear that Conte will not trust him until something drastic happens. Amidst this, Spence has admitted that the Premier League is of a higher level than Serie A.
Those who follow the two leagues closely can argue that the PL has more glitz and glamour, which leads to some of the very best players in world football plying their trade in England. Udogie told SportWeek (h/t Evening Standard):
“I like the Premier League a lot. It’s a very competitive league like Serie A, but the level is higher.”
Udogie may well be prepared for reality when he comes to Spurs. Ivan Perisic was just signed this summer and could at least be trusted for another season, while 22-year-old Ryan Sessegnon will not bow down and give his position in the senior squad so easily.
