Former Tottenham Hotspur player Danny Murphy believes summer signing Djed Spence should be given more chances
Former Tottenham Hotspur player Danny Murphy, while speaking to Lord Ping (h/t Football London), believes that Antonio Conte should give Djed Spence an opportunity to show his ability before moving on to other alternatives.
Spence signed for the Spurs in a £20m deal after a splendid season with Championship outfit Middlesborough and is highly touted as an incredible talent for the future.
However, his game-time since his move to the club has been very limited with the player only making three substitute appearances off the bench thus far.
Hence ,claims have been made of the club looking at other profiles to provide competition to Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal, who have failed to convince Spurs fans if they can hold the right-back position.
Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, coming off an impressive campaign with the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup is touted as one of the targets but Murphy believes that Spence should be given a proper chance and is no less than the in-demand Dutchman.
“Denzel Dumfries won’t be that much of a great signing. I think he is a good player, but is he better than what they’ve got? I don’t think he’s that much better.”
“Tottenham spent £20million on Djed Spence and he has not been given a game yet. He possesses all the qualities Dumfries has got, why not give him a go?”
It is rather befitting that Spence has been accorded such limited game-time thus far in the league when one year down, he was one of the best players of the Championship.
In Conte’s reign at his previous clubs as well, the Italian is known to look for finished articles rather than developing a player and hence prefers players with experience, something which Spence lacks currently.
Nonetheless, we have one of the most exciting young full-backs in the country and should be given his due chance to stake a claim in the starting eleven. It is crucial for any developing player to get minutes under his belt and both the club and Spence would not have been satisfied with how the first part of the season went.
