Harry Kane told he needs to keep scoring Tottenham Hotspur for ‘his sake’ after England penalty miss
Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane was the focus of attention when he stepped up to the plate to take his second penalty kick against France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
He had scored from the spot once before in the game but Les Bleus led the game with around six minutes left on the clock when Kane skied the penalty kick into the stands. He was the last player one would have expected to do that.
But that can happen under pressure and in a bid to be emphatic – to hit a shit that the goalkeeper will not be able to save. To add to the dynamics, Hugo Lloris, his teammate at Spurs, was in between the sticks.
Now, former Hibernian striker Tam McManus has claimed that for his own sake, Kane must keep scoring for Tottenham Hotspur. For him, the first penalty that the 29-year-old takes in a Spurs shirt could be crucial for him.
He told Football Insider exclusively:
“It’s about how you deal with the next one. If he goes and sticks it in the back of the net then nobody will be saying anything. You can almost guarantee Tottenham will get a penalty in one of their first games back. Then the nerves kick in because Kane takes them.”
“If he buries it then there is no problem. If he misses again then, well, let’s see, you’ve seen it before. But this is all speculative. Kane is a great striker. You have to back him to keep scoring for Tottenham, he was in such good form before the tournament and he was actually good at the World Cup.”
Kane is a mental giant. He has missed penalty kicks before, like any other player, and it is likely that he will some in the future as well.
That won’t be all it takes to break him down. We can count on him to be our main man up front until he is here and continue taking the spot-kicks for us. He has 261 senior goals in 408 appearances for Tottenham and we can bet our bottom dollar that he will heaps to it still.
