Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley sends message after Tottenham turned down FA Cup tickets request
Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley has sent a sober and docile message after Tottenham Hotspur respectfully turned down the club’s request for more away tickets in the FA Cup tie between the two teams.
Pompey are set to take on Spurs in the FA Cup third round on 7 January at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in an afternoon kick-off. In a draw that saw Manchester City paired with Chelsea and Manchester United get Everton, we perhaps got off easy.
Portsmouth are, with all due respect, of no match to us on paper. The League One side are struggling to return to the big time in the Premier League since their relegation from the top division in the 2009-10 season.
In such games, where there is a mismatch between the two teams on paper, it’s not uncommon to see empty seats at stadiums – especially in a massive one like ours. Hence, it made sense for Portsmouth to request for more away tickets.
Class all around from both teams
They had already sold out the 8,800 tickets alocated to their fans but Tottenham respectfully declined their approach. Now, Cowley has issued his reaction to Spurs’ response.
He told Portsmouth’s official club website:
“It’s great that we’ll have a brilliant support there. I know we tried to get some more tickets, but unfortunately that wasn’t possible. That probably means Tottenham will sell out, so it should be a fantastic atmosphere and I know we won’t be short when it comes to noise.”
Spurs’ respectful response to Portsmouth kept alive the spirit of the competition from them and has brought some bite into this tie. The League One club’s response is also measured and one that doesn’t incite needless irritation from the opposite camp.

We seem to share a good relationship with them for us to let Dane Scarlett play on loan there for a season. He wasn’t allowed to play in the first two games of the competition by the Lilywhites and will not feature against them due to the competition’s rules.
