Tottenham told hurdle in their bid to sign Barcelona and Netherlands forward Memphis Depay
Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay ahead of the January transfer window, as per Daily Mail.
The Netherlands striker was at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and was a staple in manager Louis van Gaal’s starting XI. He has had an accomplished career at Olympique Lyonnais and had a spell in England with Manchester United.
He is one of the most revered players to come out of the Netherlands in recent years and former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson has questioned where he would play if Tottenham end up signing the 28-year-old.
He exclusively told Football Insider:
“Depay is a very good player. He is a completely different one to the one who left Man United all those years ago. He is an excellent striker. His pace would give Spurs another dimension. The only thing is, where does he play?”
“Harry Kane starts if he is fit and if he’s not Richarlison plays. We have seen what he can do through the middle with Brazil at the World Cup. Depay will not want to be a squad player at this stage of his career.”
Robinson is correct. We already have a set frontline where Son Heung-min and Harry Kane are nearly untouchable, while Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison continue to fight for the third starting spot in manager Antonio Conte’s set-up.
In this, it is very hard to see where Depay fits unless one of our star-studded attackers leave. The Holland star is of a status and ability that commands him to be an important player in any team.
If we sign him and start playing him regularly, it is sure to annoy one of our current forwards who would have to give up their role in the team for Depay. On paper, this is a good deal to conduct.

He is set to become a free agent next summer (Transfermarkt) which means there is a chance that he can leave on a cut-price deal in January. But the player also has to be on board with any move and it will be a surprise if he chooses us given our current situation in the frontline.
