Tottenham Hotspur in ‘pole position’ to sign Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni
Tottenham Hotspur are in ‘pole position’ to sign Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan, as per Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t Evening Standard).
The 23-year-old could reject a contract offer at I Nerazzurri, which would put Spurs in the driving seat for his signature. He was linked with the Lilywhites this summer.
However, he stayed at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium and declared his love for the club. But his future with Inter could be about to end in the near future.
His contract at the club expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). If he doesn’t renew his deal, then the 2020-21 Scudetto winners will know that each passing transfer window could see his valuation decrease.
A great chance for Spurs
But if he does renew his deal, then clubs could find it harder and more expensive to prise him from the Italian giants’ hands. Bastoni, 23, has quickly become one of the best centre-backs in his age group.
He has showcased his ability with Inter’s senior team in recent seasons and has already won 17 senior caps with Italy. Spurs can do with a player like him in their defence.
The backline needs a physically imposing, no-nonsense defender who isn’t prone to a lot of errors. Bastoni also has a lot of years ahead of him to improve under an elite coach in manager Antonio Conte, who coached him during their time at Inter Milan.
Eric Dier and Cristian Romero have done well, but Ben Davies needs to be replaced with a natural centre-back in the left-sided centre-half position. Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga, meanwhile, seem to have an error in their game whenever they play.

Bastoni presents a good opportunity for us but we have to be on our toes to capitalise if Inter slip up and the defender seeks a move away from the club.
