Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur could sacrifice Marcus Edwards clause to sign Pedro Porro

Tottenham Hotspur could sacrifice a clause in Marcus Edwards’ contract in order to help them in their bid to sign Sporting CP right wing-back Pedro Porro, as per Portuguese outlet CM Journal (h/t Express).

Edwards left Spurs in 2019 as a rather unknown youngster for Portuguese side Vitoria. He joined them on a free transfer but Spurs added a 50% sell-on clause in his deal.

When he joined Sporting CP in January this year, Spurs did not take the 4.5million Pounds they would have been owed, and transferred that sell-on clause to his new contract. It has proven to be a smart call.

Edwards has burst onto the scene under manager Ruben Amorim and the 24-year-old is only entering the prime years of his career. His speed and dribbling already make him a handful for opposition defences, as we found out in the UEFA Champions League ourselves this season.

There is every chance that Spurs can profit well if and when Edwards is sold. But they are willing to cancel out that clause if it helps them sign Pedro Porro – the 23-year-old Spanish full-back making waves at Sporting.

The former Manchester City player has really hit the ground running this season. He has scored one goal and provided nine assists in 20 games across competitions this season.

Those who have seen him play would know that he is a player that can slot in seamlessly in our backline considering we also deploy attacking wing-backs. Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty, and Djed Spence are on our books.

But Porro could be an upgrade on all of them, especially if he is coached well and develops on the same trajectory as he has in the past couple of years. This could prove to be a smart short-term move if it actually works.

Conte should be backed appropriately so that he has the pedestal where he can stand and lead this team to glory. If it means doing financial gymnastics such as foregoing potential money from Edwards’ future sale, then so be it.
