Tottenham Hotspur to be without Richarlison, Cristian Romero, and Hugo Lloris for Brentford clash
Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has effectively ruled three players out of the starting XI against Brentford on 26 December (Monday), including Richarlison, Hugo Lloris, and Cristian Romero.
Richarlison picked up an injury while playing for Brazil at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in their quarter-final loss against Croatia. Speaking at his press conference before the London derby (h/t the Athletic) [Subscription Required], Conte confirmed:
“I spoke with the medical department. They said to me we need three or four weeks still.”
He then addressed the situation regarding Ivan Perisic, Romero, and Lloris. Only the Croatia international returned to train with the squad on Friday (23 December) while Lloris is expected to be benched for the clash against the Bees.
For the Argentina international and 2022 World Cup winner, Romero, Conte has claimed that Spurs fans can only expect to see him in action against Aston Villa on 1 January. He featured in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against Lloris’ France on 18 December. The Italian tactician said:
“Only Ivan came back today and had a training session with us. He’s available for the game against Brentford. Lloris came back to stay with us and we want him to also stay on bench and stay with us for the game against Brentford.”
“As you know very well, after the World Cup give rest to players. Cuti (Romero) he will be available for (the) next game against Aston Villa.”
Fraser Forster could, hence, make his debut for the club since arriving at N17 from Southampton this summer. These instances are why we brought in the highly experienced 34-year-old goalkeeper.
Romero’s absence could be crucial. We already have a dearth of world-class options in our backline and it seems like Davinson Sanchez could feature alongside Ben Davies and Eric Dier against Brentford.
As for Richy, his long-term absence is a huge blow. But it can be cushioned to a great extent if Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, and Dejan Kulusevski don’t pick up any injuries in the coming month.
