Journo: Tottenham Hotspur want to extend ‘unhappy’ Lucas Moura’s contract
In his latest press conference, Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte outlined his frustrations with Lucas Moura and his injury problems.
The Brazil international has made just eight league appearances this campaign, and all have been off the substitute’s bench. The total amounts to approximately 90 minutes of league football, which is appalling.
Conte said (h/t Football.London):
“About Lucas Moura, we didn’t have him from the start of the season. And we are continuing to not have him. He has this problem, he is struggling a lot to find a solution. For sure it’s a difficult situation.”
“Because I have a good player in my squad, but he’s never available. It’s like you don’t have him… don’t know, I don’t know what in the future happens about him.”
Now, CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that Lucas Moura is unhappy at N17. But regardless, he claims that Spurs want to extend his contract because they believe he can still offer a lot to the team. The trusted journo said on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube show:
“He’s been limited to a support role this season. Tottenham really don’t want to let that level of experience and what he could offer in squad management go, but his form hasn’t been good in limited appearances.”
“The reason Tottenham would like to extend is because it keeps hold of somebody they know can still contribute and still has experience. If the right offer came in it’s going to be very difficult for them to keep hold of him at the minute because I just don’t think Moura is happy.”
Conte and Jacobs’ comments make sense in their own way. It is truly frustrating for any manager to not have a quality player available due to fitness issues.
Lucas’ calf injury this campaign really limited his appearances for the team and it always felt like just after the player’s injury, the former Inter Milan manager was afraid to take risks with the player.
Then again, it could be financially straining to replace a player of his quality and versatility. Like Jacobs said, Spurs would feel that the former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) winger can offer a lot with his mazy runs, dribbling skills, and goal-scoring abilities.

And it would also be hard to get a very good sum for him considering he is in the final 18 months of his contract (Transfermarkt) and has hardly done anything in the past two seasons to warrant an elite suitor willing to break the bank for him. After all, we paid 25million Pounds to sign him.
