Gennaro Gattuso reveals he was close to being appointed Tottenham Hotspur manager last year
Italian icon Gennaro Gattuso has revealed that he was close to being appointed Tottenham Hotspur manager last year. However, in the end, the AC Milan legend decided against taking Spurs’ hot seat.
The 44-year-old has been in controversies in the past. For example, in the 2010/11 campaign, the ex-midfielder headbutted the then-assistant of the North London side Joe Jordan in the Champions League round of 16 tie.
Speaking to Spanish outlet AS (h/t Evening Standard), Gattuso disclosed that his appointment in the Tottenham hot seat was 99 per cent done. But then the Italian decided against it.
“I signed with Fiorentina then after a week I decided to leave. Because we talked about many things and I decided against it.
“A week later, Paratici called me from Tottenham. It was 99 per cent done. But then, the fans… the history about women… the madness that also happened here… I wasn’t feeling good, I didn’t feel like it. Then in October or November things appeared, but I didn’t have the menality to coach.”
Currently, the 44-year-old is in charge of La Liga outfit Valencia. He took the reins at Los Che before the start of the current campaign. At the moment, the Spanish side are 10th in the league.
As a player, Gattuso enjoyed a decorated career. The former midfielder spent most of his career at AC Milan. The Italian icon went on to win two Serie A and two Champions League titles, amongst other things.
The 44-year-old also lifted the World Cup title with Gli Azzurri in 2006. Overall, Gattuso was one of the best players of his generation, with the midfielder’s aggression setting him apart.
The Italian has also managed the Rossoneri during his relatively short managerial career. The 44-year-old spent two years in charge of the Serie A giants. Now, Tottenham have one of the most renowned managers of our time in Antonio Conte. The former Inter Milan head coach helped us get into the top four last season.
