Ivan Toney says Tottenham Hotspur were ‘lucky’ to take a point against Brentford with equaliser
Brentford striker Ivan Toney has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur got a bit lucky with their second goal which levelled things between the two sides in the Boxing Day Premier League clash.
The Bees raced to a 2-0 lead with goals from Vitaly Janelt and Toney. But Spurs showed once again why they are so tough to play against in second half of games when they scored twice within a matter of minutes.
Kane opened the tally for the Lilywhites with a near-perfect header from a Clement Lenglet cross a few minutes after the hour mark. That goal was appreciated by Kane’s compatriot, who said in his post-match interview (Amazon Prime Sport):
“They have the quality to get back into the game. It is a great ball into the box and Harry doing what he does best by putting it into the back of the net with a great header.”
The second goal was a bit lucky for us indeed. A cross from Dejan Kulusevski from our right flank deflected from Ben Mee and fell straight into Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s path, who took a touch and scored with a beautiful finish.
Toney claimed that it was perhaps a lucky goal, but he took nothing away from the Lilywhites’ powers of recovery.
“I think they got a bit lucky with the second one but it shows their character by digging in deep, in the end, the draw was the fair result.”
Spurs should have won the game. That’s what their fans would have told you before kick-off and what they would have told you once the Denmark international levelled things up.
But it wasn’t meant to be. A point away from home against a Brentford side that beat Manchester City before the mid-season break isn’t the end of the world.

But it was a game that we can learn from. As Toney said, luck was on our side with the equaliser but once Kane’s goal came, there was only one team in the game. Closing out games in a strong manner is also an art – one that we have seemed to have mastered.
