Dejan Kulusevski tells what Tottenham must do to become a ‘big team’ after Brentford draw
Tottenham Hotspur winger Dejan Kulusevski believes that Spurs have to start games in a better manner if they want to become a ‘big team’.
Once again, Tottenham clawed their way back to avoid defeat this season after scoring two goals in the second half against Brentford to rescue a point. The Bees took a two-goal lead via Vitaly Janelt and Ivan Toney’s goals.
But Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjger’s goals within a few minutes of each other brought us level. It was Kulusevski’s ball that deflected off Ben Mee into the Denmark international’s path for the equaliser.
He has been a menace down that right flank and showed once again how badly Tottenham missed him when he was injured for a big chunk of the first half of this season. Speaking after the game, the Sweden international was annoyed with the result.
Kulusevski makes a good point
He told SPURSPLAY (h/t Football.London):
“We have to improve. It’s not okay to start games like this. If we want to be a big team then we need to start playing from the first minute. It’s not enough with words, we have to do it on the pitch.”
He is absolutely correct. A graphic displayed after Spurs’ draw against Brentford showed that the Lilywhites have rescued 14 points this campaign from losing positions in the Premier League – the most of any team.
That is a lot. While it shows our powers of recovery, it also begs the question why Spurs cannot start games in a better manner. It is a question that has troubled many fans because we cannot recover to win or draw every single time.
Deki is right. Tottenham are a huge club in the European landscape but you don’t see the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich starting matches in a fashion where they have to concede to start producing good football.
