Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur submit enquiry for Sporting CP’s Marcus Edwards
Tottenham Hotspur have submitted an enquiry for Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards, as per Portuguese outlet A Bola (Subscription Required).
The 24-year-old English winger has burst onto the scene at Sporting under manager Ruben Amorim. He has scored nine goals and provided as many assists for the Portuguese giants in 24 games across competitions this season.
He notably spent over a decade at Spurs, mostly with the youth academy, before permanently leaving our squad in 2019. A move to Vitoria Guimaraes saw a 50% sell-on clause inserted into his deal.
A move to Sporting in January 2022 saw that clause transferred to his contract with his new club, rather than Spurs cashing in on what they could have gotten for him at the time. Now, it seems they themselves want the winger.
Edwards to Spurs make no sense
This would make it two Sporting players on our radar, given our interest in right-back Podro Porro. Edwards is currently a regular starter under Amorim and is enjoying a good time in Lisbon with the Liga NOS giants.
Edwards would have left Spurs as there wouldn’t have been a place for him in the first-team set-up – or that he wasn’t highly rated at the time. Sure, he is proving a point in Portugal.
An aggressive dribbler with pace to burn is an asset to have all day long, but where does he fit, and what incentives would have to return to N17 if all he will do is be fighting several world-class players for playing time?

Spurs are a more popular club playing in a more popular league where Edwards will play alongside some of the best footballers in England. But if we can’t find a spot for him in attack that already has Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura, Bryan Gil, and Richarlison, then it makes no sense for this transfer to happen.
