Antonio Conte addresses Son Heung-min’s poor form at Tottenham Hotspur
Manager Antonio Conte wasn’t specifically asked to address Son Heung-min’s performance against Aston Villa in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa.
Yet, in his post-match interview, he stated that Son had to improve. Clearly this has been something on his mind recently and he did show in the 6-2 win against Leicester City earlier this season that Son isn’t undroppable in his eyes.
Now, speaking at his pre-match press conference before the Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on 4 January at Selhurst Park, he was asked to directly address the South Korea international’s poor form. He said (h/t Football.London):
“Son for sure is struggling to find the best form and after the injury he had against Marseille he struggle a bit.”
“Also the World Cup he didn’t score but we are talking about a player that if we put him in discussion, we are in trouble because Sonny and Kane are the two most important players, with Lloris. If we have doubts about them, we are in trouble.”
We cannot be partial here. If Emerson Royal or Hugo Lloris get flak for poor performances, so should Son if he isn’t producing the performances required at the top level.
He isn’t one to rest on his past laurels, so it could be something else. Perhaps the facial injury he suffered in our UEFA Champions League group-stage win against Olympique de Marseille is still affecting him mentally.
Or, this could be just a bad patch. He has a grand total of 0 goals and one assist in his last Premier League games… that is simply not good enough.

Make no mistake, Son is world-class but he needs to start pulling his own weight if Spurs are to recover from their slump and make a push for a top-four finish. But Conte is right – when the form a player such as Son is questioned, that means the club is in trouble, which we are.
