Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty complicating Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Pedro Porro
Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty are happy at Tottenham Hotspur, which, as per Evening Standard, is complicating the club’s pursuit of Sporting CP star Pedro Porro.
The Spanish right-back has been linked with us for a while and there is no doubt that a move to Spurs will offer him the chance to become a global name. Many stars have made the switch from Liga NOS to the Premier League as a step up in their career.
Eric Dier, Bruno Fernandes, and Darwin Nunez are just three of countless examples. However, with Emerson and Doherty happy at N17, a deal for Porro will obviously be complicated.
The Brazilian right-back has been the club’s first-choice pick in that position under manager Antonio Conte. That trend has changed after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where Matt Doherty has started against Brentford, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace.
What to do?
Despite the uncertainty around their starting spots, both of them are said to be happy at Tottenham. Djed Spence, meanwhile, will be even tougher to move on.
It would be senseless to imagine the club investing money to sign him this summer and letting him leave without even giving him a decent run of games. Hence, having four first-team right-backs can be something of an issue.
The wages of those players plus the fact that Conte will have to keep dividing gametime to everyone will be a headache. 23-year-old Porro has been brilliant for Sporting this season, assisting 10 times in 22 games across competitions.

He can be the upgrade we badly need down the right-hand side. The club would be wise to take strong steps to rid themselves of either Doherty and Emerson if that is what it will take to sign the former Manchester City starlet.
