Tottenham Hotspur will not renew the contract of Lucas Moura
According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur have made the decision to not renew Lucas Moura’s contract and let the Brazilian leave on a free transfer in the summer
Moura’s time at Tottenham has become increasingly frustrating in the last 12 months. The forward has had an awful time with injuries and has hardly featured for Antonio Conte at all this season.
A key player in the team under Mauricio Pochettino and then Jose Mourinho, the arrival of other forwards has seen Moura fall down in the pecking order. His own fitness troubles have not helped his cause either.
Antonio Conte has shown a preference to use the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, two players he signed since he became the Spurs manager over Moura and it does look like his time at N17 is coming to an end.
Make no mistake, Moura is still a very useful player. He can be a good squad player if he stays at Tottenham but the problem with him now is more whether he will actually manage to remain fit and Spurs don’t seem to want to take a chance.
The thing with the 30-year-old is that his playing style does not help his fitness, which causes him to be extremely inconsistent. Moura is extremely explosive as a forward and this could be one of the main reasons the injuries have increased with advancing age.
With Spurs deciding against renewing his contract, Moura will now be free to discuss with clubs over a free transfer in the summer. He can still play at a top club as long as he proves his fitness.
Moura could surprise all of us and end up being a key part of Conte’s team in the second half of the season but the likelihood of that happening is very minimal. We might have already seen the last of the Brazilian in a Spurs shirt.
