Sporting CP respond to Tottenham Hotspur’s offer for Chelsea target Pedro Porro

Sporting CP have rejected Tottenham Hotspur’s offer for Chelsea target Pedro Porro, as per Portuguese outlet Record (h/t Metro).

Chelsea have also been keen to sign the player as they look to increase competition in the right-wing-back position for Reece James. Spurs apparently met with their Sporting CP counterparts and made a 29million Euros offer plus bonuses.

This is below Sporting’s valuation of the player, despite Spurs hoping that performance-related bonuses would bridge the gap between the two parties. They are adamant that the player will only leave if the 39million Euros release clause in his contract is met.

Chelsea’s inclusion has also come at the wrong time for us. A presence of a financially strong superclub will only increase the Primeira Liga club’s confidence that they can potentially look to exact as much money from the deal as the release clause allows.

What should Spurs do?

They have no one to compete with James at right-back. Cesar Azpilicueta, who has largely shifted to playing as a centre-back, clearly doesn’t offer the same attacking endeavour, agility, and speed as James.

Porro could be a brilliant understudy for them – which makes the Blues’ presence in this transfer race a worrying situation for us. But the Lilywhites meeting with Sporting and supposedly making a formal offer means we are seriously interested in signing the player.

Hopefully, if we are prepared to go this far for the former Manchester City wing-back, we can increase our offer and potentially meet the release clause. It isn’t a small amount, but it is also not a massive sum to pay for potentially solving our right-back problems.

Emerson Royal hasn’t been impressive while Matt Doherty could be on the decline at the age of 31. Djed Spence, meanwhile, can’t seem to start a game under manager Antonio Conte.

Porro, 23, has 10 assists in 23 games across competitions this term. He can develop into a very good right-back with the right guidance and hopefully, the Lilywhites are willing to take a risk with him and put an offer on Sporting’s table which they cannot refuse.
