Napoli’s Alex Meret has been added to Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer shortlist as the search for Hugo Lloris’ successor continues.

This is according to Italian outlet La Repubblica (h/t the Express), who claim that the 25-year-old is now on Spurs’ radar. Lloris is 36 and errors have continuously crept into his game.

That isn’t a secret. It’s about time the club starts looking for a world-class replacement for the two-time FIFA World Cup finalist with France.

He has hung up his boots at the international level, which is a telling sign that the player could be in the twilight of his career. Meret is 11 years younger than Lloris and has a bright future ahead of him if he continues to develop on the same curve.

Meret could be a smart option

He has benefitted from David Ospina’s transfer to Al-Nassr last summer and has been the club’s undisputed starter this term, with 19 Serie A appearances to his name.

He has kept eight clean sheets during that time and conceded just 14 goals. He won the 2020 UEFA European Championship with Italy.

WhoScored claims that the player is good at stopping shots from close range, has good reflexes and is adept at saving penalties. Catching crosses and concentration, however, have been listed as his potential weaknesses.

It will only be fair to judge Meret at Spurs when we see him play – or if we see him play at the club. The interest seems to be in its early stages but this is surely a transfer to keep an eye on, with the club also linked with relegation-bound Everton custodian Jordan Pickford and Brentford’s David Raya.

The good news for us is, if Meret doesn’t renew his deal at Napoli, he will be in the final 12 months of his deal at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium this summer (Transfermarkt).
