Why Tottenham Hotspur are facing a hurdle in loaning out Djed Spence
Tottenham Hotspur are facing a hurdle in loaning out Djed Spence as they do not want to risk losing him at the end of the season, as per the Sun.
The 22-year-old Englishman is struggling for playing time this campaign, having made only four appearances in the Premier League. All of those have come as a last-minute substitute.
Leicester City, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Olympique Lyonnais are interested in the right-back. The Foxes and the Bees could use a player on the right side of their defence in the second half of the season.
Palace, similarly, could use someone young and dynamic to compete with Nathaniel Clyne and Joel Ward – two right-backs in their 30s who aren’t known for their attacking endeavour.
Smart stance by Spurs
Lyon could have a situation where they need an urgent replacement for their French right-back Malu Gusto, which is where Spence could come into the picture. However, Spurs are refusing to budge with one aspect of his potential loan move.
They do not want any offers regarding a permanent transfer or a loan move with an option or obligation to buy. This seems to be a little surprising considering the complete lack of playing time he is getting here.
Manager Antonio Conte announced very soon after the Englishman’s transfer from Middlesbrough that Spence wasn’t a signing he wanted, but it was Spurs who pushed to sign him.
Perhaps the backroom is preparing for life without Conte. The Italian tactician becomes a free agent this summer and with him yet to put pen to paper on a new contract, a new manager next season could use Spence more often.
