Tottenham Hotspur coach Cristian Stellini gives update on Bryan Gil’s future amid Sevilla interest
Three weeks ago, Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager Cristian Stellini gave his view on Bryan Gil’s future at the club in January ahead of our FA Cup win against Portsmouth.
He said (h/t Football.London):
“I think so, yeah [staying until summer]. He could and he’s playing very well. We’re so happy because he’s another player we worked a lot with. He has a great, great, great improvement, because he trains every day 110%…”
Stellini was on media duty once again on Friday (27 January) ahead of our FA Cup fourth-round tie against Preston North End. When asked his views on the former Sevilla winger’s future at the club this month, the Italian tactician replied:
“It’s not a question that I can answer because I’m not involved in these types of decisions. My opinion is the same as three weeks ago so nothing has changed for me.”
The question was asked in the context of Arnaut Danjuma’s arrival on loan from Villarreal until the end of the season. The 25-year-old Netherlands international will be direct competition for Gil down the flanks.
The Spaniard hasn’t been seeing much playing time under manager Antonio Conte anyway and has managed just 148 minutes of Premier League action this season. This is a shockingly low number considering the injury troubles that Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, and even Son Heung-min have had this season.
Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli has confirmed the club’s interest in the 21-year-old winger. He recently admitted that he wanted him during his time at Olympique de Marseille as well (h/t Evening Standard):
“Yes, he fits the profile I want because I already wanted him for Marseille. When I was there I called him personally. It would be very interesting for our wings, but I’m not participating in the possibility of him getting here.”
Fans have seen Gil come on in games and add freshness to our attack. But if Conte is to continue keeping him on the fringes, it makes zero sense to keep him here and waste his formative years.

If a loan move to Sevilla – his club between 2012 and 2021 – can be arranged, then we would be smart to accept it. Although we must make sure there isn’t an option or obligation to buy him permanently.
