Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur don’t want to loan Espanyol target Pape Matar Sarr

Tottenham Hotspur look set to keep Pape Matar Sarr at the club until at least the end of the season.

The 20-year-old midfielder was struggling for playing time under manager Antonio Conte before the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was also loaned back to FC Metz last season so he could continue his development away from N17.

He made no appearances for the Lilywhites before 2023. All four games he has played in across competitions this campaign for the senior team came in January.

He came on as a substitute in the 2-0 loss against Aston Villa and the 4-0 away league win against Aston Villa in the Premier League. The Senegal international then started in the 2-0 league defeat against Arsenal in the north London derby.

Wise call

Sarr was pretty impressive in the 1-0 FA Cup win against Portsmouth as he played the full 90 minutes of the match. It seems that those performances have been enough to convince Spurs that he is an option for the first team in the coming months.

According to Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto via Relevo (h/t Football.London), Sarr is no longer an option for Espanyol as Spurs do not want to lose him in January.

It’s a smart call as well. We haven’t signed a central midfielder this month and Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury at the 2022 FIFA World Cup was a timely reminder that neither he nor Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is immune from fatigue and fitness problems.

Oliver Skipp is an option and so is Yves Bissouma, but neither has been convincing with their performances. It’s always smart for a manager to have options to choose from and hopefully, Sarr is given a run out for the senior side when we face Preston North End in the FA Cup on Saturday (28 January) at Deepdale.
