Tottenham looking to sign Piero Hincapie in a Pape Sarr-type deal

Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie in a Pape Sarr-type deal

Tottenham Hotspur are seemingly keen to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie but are unwilling to match their £80million valuation of the player.

According to the Sun, Spurs can instead sign him for £20million this month but would have to loan him back to Leverkusen until the end of the season. That is one-fourth of the aforementioned valuation.

This would certainly be a strange move from the German side if they are willing to forgo so much in potential cash to have the Ecuador international for just five months of football.

Tottenham could seriously profit from this in a deal that would be reminiscent of the one which brought Pape Matar Sarr to N17. The Lilywhites paid £14.6million plus add-ons for the Senegal international in the summer of 2021 before loaning him back to FC Metz for the following season.

What next for Hincapie?

Hincapie would be an elite addition to our backline which badly needs a left-footed natural centre-back. Ben Davies is only a temporary, makeshift solution.

Moreover, Eric Dier hasn’t been at his best and is not at the level of top defenders playing for other ‘big six clubs’. Cristian Romero is perhaps the only world-class option on our books.

But it remains to be seen if the club is okay with not adding defenders to the team this January, considering our backline has been atrocious at times this season, conceding 31 goals in 21 Premier League games.

Perhaps a loan signing, one that mirrors that of Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal, won’t hurt but then again, you can’t guarantee a world-class addition in that form. The best defenders in the world can’t be signed like that.

It’s a tough one for Spurs but from the financial standpoint, it makes sense to wait for Hincapie.
