Tottenham Hotspur struggler Djed Spence chooses to join Rennes on loan

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Djed Spence has chosen to join Stade Rennais on loan instead of La Liga giants Atletico Madrid until the end of the season, as per Football.London.

The 22-year-old English right-back signed for Spurs in a big-money move from Middlesbrough last summer. He was a big investment on our part as we looked to sign a solution at right-back.

Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have never been convincing as starters. They have hardly had a run of good games where they are making a difference on a consistent basis going forward and at the back.

Fans hope Spence, who helped Nottingham Forest achieve promotion to the Premier League this season, would help in this regard. It has been the opposite.

A good move for Spence

Manager Antonio Conte has used him for a total of five minutes this season. This has come as four last-minute cameo appearances since the start of last season.

It’s good that he has found an escape route for the time being. Stade Rennais currently have Hamari Traore, Lorenz Assignon, and youngster Guela Doue, but Spence will arguably be an upgrade on those names.

That doesn’t mean he won’t have to fight for his place in manager Bruno Genesio’s starting XI. The report states that the loan does not have an option to buy and the player will return to north London in the summer.

He apparently had offers from Atletico Madrid and Sassuolo, but he rejected them in favour of the Ligue 1 outfit, where he will link up with fellow Spurs loanee Joe Rodon. With Nahuel Molina already available to manager Diego Simeone, Spence ran the risk of being his understudy at the Wanda Metropolitano.
