Alasdair Gold is amazed that Emerson Royal is still a Tottenham player
The transfer window has come and gone and, as always, there were some surprising moves and some that were not so surprising. One of the more surprising moves was the departure of Matt Doherty from Tottenham and the fact that Emerson Royal is still a Tottenham player.
Football London journalist Alasdair Gold speaking to Gold and Guest podcast is amazed that Royal has survived the transfer deadline day.
“Who would have thought, the day we heard those cheers of the whole stadium as Emerson Royal was taken off, and he’s survived the cull on transfer deadline day. It’s incredible!”
Doherty himself did not have a great time at Tottenham either but he was much more welcomed by the N17 faithful than Emerson Royal was. Royal, who has not been as impressive as some would have hoped has been at the receiving end of some harsh treatment from the fans.
Gold says that while he is not meant to be disrespectful, he thinks that Royal is a fine backup player
“I think as a backup, he’s absolutely fine, Emerson Royal.”
That’s exactly what the Brazilian is going to be at Tottenham now. The arrival of Pedro Porro in January has somewhat eased the club’s right-back conundrum or at least they hope so. Emerson is expected to be his understudy.
Another player who has left Tottenham is Djed Spence, who is now in France. He is however just on a simple loan at Stade Rennais. Spence was one of the most promising young players in the Tottenham squad and has a huge future here.
Emerson who joined Tottenham from Barcelona last summer has struggled to adapt to the Premier League. He was one of the most promising youngsters in La Liga but it has not translated in England.
After months of a merry-go-round for the right-back role, it finally looks like a hierarchy has been established in that position. Porro has to be the first choice and rightly so, considering our investment in him.
