Antonio Conte hands Tottenham Hotspur players a day off after win vs Manchester City
Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager Cristian Stellini was on touchline duty in Antonio Conte’s absence against Manchester City.
The former Chelsea boss continues to recover from gallbladder surgery he underwent recently. However, Conte was on the phone and was congratulating Tottenham players, especially record-breaker Harry Kane, after their memorable 1-0 win against Manchester City.
Speaking after the win against City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 5 February, Stellini said (h/t Football.London):
“We spoke to Antonio to the dressing room. He was on the phone, he said he was very happy and he gave compliments to everyone, especially Harry. He was very happy and he gave them all the day off tomorrow.”
It seems that Conte was so pleased with our win against the defending Premier League champions that he has awarded them a day off from training tomorrow (Monday). That’s quite a prize.
A late sleep perhaps and no alarm bells to wake them up tomorrow. They can use this day to recuperate and take a break before the preparation begins for the Premier League clash against Leicester City away from home on 11 February.
It remains to be seen if Conte is back on the touchline for that game, but Stellini has shown – first against Preston North End last month and now against City – that he can hold the fort in the Italian boss’ temporary absence.
The win against manager Pep Guardiola’s side takes us to 39 points this campaign – one away from fourth-placed Newcastle United, who have a game in hand. There is surely no downside to beating Man City apart from the fact that we may have aided our bitter rivals’ title bid.

Arsenal fans can sleep easy knowing their team have the chance to pull eight points clear if they win their game in hand. But that shouldn’t be our focus right now. It should be strictly on our progress and to make the top four this campaign.
