Gary Lineker congratulates Harry Kane on breaking Jimmy Greaves’ Tottenham Hotspur record
Harry Kane scored his 267th Tottenham Hotspur goal in our 1-0 win against Manchester City earlier today (5 February).
Rodri took too much time on the ball, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was quick to steal the ball after a wayward pass from the former Atletico Madrid midfielder. He then laid it off to Kane, who scored with a precise right-footed shot inside the box in the 15th minute.
The goal marked a historic occasion for Kante, who overtook Jimmy Greaves’ 266-goal tally to become Tottenham’s all-time leading goal-scorer. The 29-year-old’s goal proved to be the only goal of the game.
After the game, former Tottenham Hotspur player and England legend Gary Lineker was quick to congratulate the England international on his momentous achievement. He tweeted:
“He’s done it. @HKane scores yet again and goes ahead of the great Jimmy Greaves as @spurs ’ all-time top scorer. What an incredible achievement. Well played. 👏🏻👏🏻”
Lineker was no slouch in his playing days. The English legend bagged goals at a scary rate in Tottenham colours, scoring 72 in 119 appearances across three seasons with us.
He could have perhaps been in contention to break Greaves’ record had he stayed at Spurs for longer, but Barcelona came calling soon after. Hopefully, that doesn’t prove to be the case with Kane.

He has been on the radar of Bayern Munich and Manchester United recently. Kane has just 17 months left on his contract at N17 and is yet to renew his deal. Hopefully, the love from the fans and the emotional moments after the full-time whistle against City, where he was honoured for his achievement on the pitch, make him realise just what he means to us.
