Harry Kane and Matt Doherty shared the pitch as teammates 62 times during their two-and-a-half-year stint together at Tottenham Hotspur.

Pedro Porro’s arrival from Sporting CP on deadline day meant Spurs were in a position to do Atletico Madrid a favour and terminate Doherty’s contract to facilitate the 31-year-old’s move to the Wanda Metropolitano.

He joined Spurs from Wolverhampton Wanderers as one of the more underrated right-wing-backs in the league. Doherty left the club after scoring thrice and providing nine assists in 71 games across competitions.

He was always ready to step in whenever needed and was good competition for Emerson Royal in the last 18 months. Tottenham fans would have wished him nothing but the best for his spell at Atletico Madrid when his surprise free transfer to the Spanish club was confirmed.

Matt’s special message for Kane

It seems that Doherty forged some friendships during his time at N17, which isn’t really a surprise. He just looks like one of those nice guys who is a pleasure to be around for teammates.

Doherty was perhaps watching Kane break Tottenham’s goal-scoring record in our win against Manchester City on Sunday (5 February). Kane is now the club’s all-time top scorer after overtaking Jimmy Greaves’ long-standing record of 266 senior club goals for Spurs.

After the game, the former Wolves right-back posted a graphic of Kane’s 267-goal record and wrote on his Instagram story:

“Best striker in the world without a question @harrykane”.

Not really a hot take, Matt. Jokes aside, it is good to see Doherty get a move to a club where he could get a shot at some playing time as either backup or competition for Argentina international Nahuel Molina.
