Barcelona missed out on signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Bryan Gil last year
Barcelona were apparently close to signing Tottenham Hotspur misfit Bryan Gil last year in the winter transfer window, as per Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
The Catalan giants signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Adama Traore, Ferran Torres, and Dani Alves that winter. Gil was one of the names manager Xavi Hernandez liked and wanted at Spotify Camp Nou.
It was La Liga where the Spanish winger got to display his skills before being snapped up by Spurs in the summer of 2021. After an uneventful first half of his debut season, Tottenham let Gil join Valencia on loan.
Fast forward a year, he has been allowed to join Sevilla on a temporary deal until the end of the campaign – the club where we signed him from. It isn’t clear if Barcelona wanted him permanently or on loan.
Barcelona could have had Gil
Given the fact that we signed him just a few months before Barca’s January interest in the winger, perhaps a loan move would have been more sensible. Gil went on to make 17 appearances across competitions for Los Che, providing just one assist.
Now, Barca have strengthened themselves down the flank with the signing of Raphinha last summer. It would be a surprise if they return to the market for the 21-year-old in the near future.
Gil has been evidently lacking a physical aspect to his game which makes him a frail player for the Premier League. His loan spell at Sevilla this season will tell a lot about where his immediate future lies.
Spurs saw fit to let him leave on loan this season and sign Arnaut Danjuma on loan instead. That’s an indication that the Spaniard has to make big strides or he risks being left behind in manager Antonio Conte’s team.
