Tottenham forward Lucas Moura was close to joining Al Sadd in January
According to Italian outlet Foot Mercato, Lucas Moura, the out-of-favour Tottenham star, was close to joining Al Sadd in the recent January transfer window.
The Brazilian attacking player, who has been an important player for Tottenham in recent years, has found himself out of favour with manager Antonio Conte this season. He is set to be a free agent in the summer with the club not expected to extend his time.
Injuries have really haunted the Champions League hero this campaign. He has been unable to recover from a recurrent problem. In his absence, Tottenham and Conte have moved on to other players.’
This has led to interest from several clubs, including Al Sadd, Southampton, Crystal Palace, and Everton, who were all reportedly keen on acquiring his services. However, the player refused the move.
Moura joined Tottenham from Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, and made an immediate impact, scoring a crucial hat-trick in the Champions League semi-final against Ajax to secure Tottenham’s place in the final.
This made him a cult hero at N17. Despite never being a starter for the club, Moura has really made a few important contributions coming off the bench and at full flow, he can be a delight to watch.
Moura’s ability to play in multiple positions across the forward line would have made him an attractive option for the above-mentioned clubs. However, he seems keen on seeing out the rest of his deal.
With him set to be a free agent in the summer, Moura is free to negotiate with potential clubs over a move next season. He can still be useful for certain clubs as long as he can manage to stay fit.
