Romano squashes Barcelona’s links with Tottenham Hotspur starlet Bryan Gil last year
Recently, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claimed that Barcelona were interested in Tottenham Hotspur forward Bryan Gil in the January transfer window last year.
Eventually, the Spanish winger ended up moving to Valencia on a six-month loan instead, while Barca ended the transfer window by onboarding Adama Traore on a short deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano doesn’t believe there is any truth to such claims, at least according to what he knows. Writing in his exclusive CaughtOffside column, he mentioned:
“Despite some speculation to the contrary, I’m not aware of Barcelona-Tottenham talks for Bryan Gil. He was hoping for Sevilla move because he wanted to go back there and be a regular starter, he wanted to play and at Barca there’s more competition, even more so than at Spurs probably.”
Gil moved to Sevilla this January after failing to find any meaningful playing time under manager Antonio Conte. Los Nervionenses lost to Barcelona by a 3-0 scoreline this weekend, where Gil made his second debut for the club.
Arnaut Danjuma’s loan move from Villarreal would have only increased competition for the Spanish winger. It’s good that Gil has returned to a team where he can hope to play in familiar surroundings and prepare himself before his return to first-team football in the Premier League.
As for his potential move to Barcelona last year, it was also a piece of news that looked a bit when you first read it. It can’t be said for certain how much truth there would be to such a claim.

But it is a thing of the past. Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur both have a number of quality wingers that would be ahead of Gil in the pecking order no matter what. The onus is now on the Spurs loanee to prove his worth in La Liga and force himself into Conte’s plans.
