Harry Kane full of praise for Tottenham Hotspur’s young midfield duo
Tottenham Hotspur’s loss in the Champions League may have been a bitter pill to swallow, but there were positives to take away from the match against AC Milan, and Harry Kane has made sure to highlight the performances of the young midfield duo of Pape Matar Sarr and Oliver Skipp.
With Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg out through suspension and Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma sidelined with injuries, Antonio Conte had to turn to the Tottenham youngsters to step up in a critical moment.
And step up they did, as they turned in excellent performances against one of the most formidable teams in Europe on arguably the biggest stage there is in club football. It might have been a narrow loss for Tottenham but it did not feel like one.
Pape Matar Sarr, in particular, caught the eye with his tireless running, defensive contributions, and attacking threat. The Senegalese midfielder had previously impressed against Arsenal in the North London Derby, and he showed that he can handle the pressure of a big occasion once again at the San Siro.
Oliver Skipp, meanwhile, has had a challenging season, with injuries hampering his progress. But the young midfielder was back to his best against AC Milan, reminding everyone of the talent that saw him become a regular in Antonio Conte’s midfield before his injury setback.
Speaking about the duo as quoted by Football. London, here is what stand-in captain Harry Kane had to say about what he witnessed.
“I thought they were both outstanding to be honest. It’s not easy to come into the team, two young players who have not got as much experience as some of the others and to come in in this sort of atmosphere and game and perform the way they did, they should be proud”
Those were some big words from a superstar like Kane which would make both the youngsters feel so good about their performances. Hojbjerg is expected to return to the team for the next game but the two youngsters are probably going to be rotated alongside him for the rest of the season.
Of course, there’s still work to be done. There is a deficit to be overturned when the two teams meet again at N17 and Tottenham will be confident that they can overcome a 1-0 score to qualify for the next round.
