Alan McInally blasts Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier and claims he is not suited to play in a back three or back four
Former FC Bayern Munich player Alan McInally while speaking to Sky Sports Premier League via Twitter has lashed out at Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Eric Dier after his subpar performances throughout the campaign.
Dier has been found guilty on too many occasions of conceding easy goals and not being able to fully implement himself as a starting centre-back.
Initially starting his career as a holding midfielder, Dier was trusted into the centre-back position by former manager Jose Mourinho.
Antonio Conte continued with the practice and placed Dier as one of the three defenders in his preferred formation. However, according to McInally, Dier has not done enough for him to be convinced of his abilities as a defender, either in a back four or back three.
“I don’t think he knows where any danger is, I don’t like him in any back four or back three”
It is considerably true looking at his recent performances and how many times our defence is the reason for the loss of crucial points. The consecutive losses suffered against Leicester City and AC Milan have laid bare the deficiencies in the squad and central defence is one such department.
With more than three months of football left to be played, it needs sorting out more than anything and a stable partner alongside Cristian Romero is needed to create a solid unit at the back.
Hopefully, Conte is able to motivate the team for the upcoming games ahead as a lot of how our season will end would be hinging on the games in the league.
The other argument present in favour of Dier is that there is no player in the squad at the moment that is able to fulfil the role required by Conte from his central defenders, where he wants his players to be comfortable playing out from the back.
