Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger makes a blunt verdict on the current state of the Tottenham Hotspur squad
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger while speaking to beIN Sport (h/t the Metro) gives a damning assessment of the Tottenham Hotspur squad and believes it lacks top-quality talent in the first-team.
Spurs fell to a second loss in four days after losing the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 games against AC Milan.
The loss comes after the embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Leicester City on the weekend and Wenger has not held back over his assessment of the current Spurs squad.
“Tottenham for me, is a team that is not convincing, they have not enough top quality players.
They have invested a lot of money but Tottenham in the Premier League has lost eight games in 23. They have just come out of a defeat to Leicester, 4-1, when Leicester is not a team who are doing especially well.
Overall I believe this team lacks pace, they with a mono-rhythm and they do not change pace enough and cannot compete physically pace-wise at the top level at the moment.”
Although Wenger was the manager for the longest time of our local rivals Arsenal, there is not much wrong with the assessment that he has made.
Daniel Levy did spend a good amount of money in the summer transfer window on seven players in total and many have failed to convince in a Spurs jersey truly.
Ivan Perisic has been the only notable signing of the summer who has been able to create an impact and has been a regular part of the starting eleven.
On the other hand, Yves Bissouma has been bang average since his move from Brighton & Hove Albion while Richarlison is yet to score a single goal for the club and March is just around the corner.
Djed Spence was deemed a club signing and definitely needs time to grow into the potential that made Spurs buy him in the first place and only time will tell whether the investment will reap rewards in the future or not.
As many claims that Antonio Conte is not fully committed to the cause at play, there should also be arguments made on whether the current players are at a level capable of playing the football demanded by the Italian.
