Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks opens up on the reasons behind securing a loan move to Sampdoria
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks while speaking to The Times (h/t The Standard) opens up on his exit from the club and how he is appreciating his loan spell at Serie A outfit Sampdoria.
Winks impressed many with his performances under former manager Jose Mourinho however the arrival of Antonio Conte saw his minutes get limited. In the 2021/22 season, Winks only made 19 Premier League appearances and hence the writing was on the wall that a move away would be the best thing for the player.
Hence, Winks secured a loan move to Sampdoria at the start of the season with the Italian having the option to buy permanently at the end of the loan deal.
So far, Winks has impressed in his time in Italy and admits the fact that he felt wanted by the club was a major factor in his decision to move to Italy.
“The main driver [in leaving] was I wanted to play for a team that wanted me, that respected me enough and wanted to commit to me in that sense.
I wanted to feel wanted and appreciated because in the last couple of years it was difficult at Spurs. I didn’t have that feeling.”
Although the start of the season felt like the best decision for both parties with Conte preferring other players over Winks, the current injury issues do feel that a player of Winks’s quality would have been useful.
On the other hand, a loan deal is the best way for the player to get regular minutes and with uncertainty surrounding Conte’s future at the club, it would not be hard to argue that a new environment could change things for the time being.
It is always good to see players from the Academy establishing themselves in the first team and the 27-year-old still has time to make things right at Spurs.

Hopefully, the loan spell gives him the much-needed confidence and exposure to come back as a stronger player and try to stack a claim in the Spurs first-team next season.
