Tottenham Hotspur star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg ‘hurt’ by Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury vs Leicester City
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has lost his partner in crime for the rest of the season after Rodrigo Bentancur’s ligament injury in Tottenham Hotspur’s humiliating 4-1 loss against Leicester City in our latest Premier League game.
The Uruguay international will not play a single minute of action for the remainder of the campaign. Given Yves Bissouma’s spell on the sidelines, this has left us with just Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, and Pape Matar Sarr as our options in midfield.
The duo played in midfield in our 1-0 loss against AC Milan in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash earlier this month. Speaking ahead of his team’s clash against West Ham United on Sunday (19 February), Hojbjerg admitted [h/t Official Spurs website]:
“It does hurt. You have a feeling he makes you better playing alongside him and that is a mutual feeling. We have both added scoring points to our game this season which is not bad.
“We have to manage it; we have to overcome this. I told him personally how great I think he is, but this is a time to come back stronger and grow, which life gives you sometimes. It is not easy, there will be difficult moments, but he is a strong and smart person who will find his way
Those who have seen Bentancur and Hojbjerg play for Spurs would have noted how they are pushing forward in recent months and trying to make a tangible impact in the final third.
This isn’t natural to their game neither is it something one can ask from players playing in the position they are being deployed in under manager Antonio Conte. Slowly but surely, they are developing into one of the best midfield pairings in England.
Bentancur’s injury is a huge blow in that regard. The former Juventus midfielder is one of our best players on his day and is important at both ends of the pitch.

His loss, however, could be Sarr and Skipp’s gain to show that they really belong in this Spurs XI before the summer window arrives. With Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, and Harry Winks potentially in line to return from their respective loan spells, the following months could be telling for the young midfield duo if they want to have a future at N17.
