Borussia Monchengladbach confirm Tottenham and Newcastle target Marcus Thuram will leave this summer

Borussia Monchengladbach managing director Roland Virkus has confirmed that Marcus Thuram will leave the club this summer amidst interest from Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

He told German outlet Sport1 (h/t ChronicleLive):

“We’ve decided to allow Thuram to leave. The fact he plans to leave on a free transfer is not a positive situation. I can’t sugarcoat it. We stretched ourselves with Thuram. We have to accept that there are bigger clubs Marcus might move to.”

Thuram reached new heights last year when he was named in France’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad. He also featured in Les Bleus‘ loss to Argentina in the final of the competition on 18 December.

Signing a player of his ability for nothing this summer would be a dream scenario for any club in the world. The 25-year-old can play anywhere across the frontline and knows where the goal is.

Not an urgent target for Spurs

Thuram has registered 14 goals and four assists in 22 games across competitions this term. Virkus’ admission has confirmed that he will leave this summer and implied that there could be a war to sign the French forward.

There are many teams in Europe who would want him in their team. Thuram has decent pace, is a neat finisher, and is excellent with the ball at his feet.

Spurs will be hugely strengthened if they sign him. He could be a great replacement for Arnaut Danjuma if and when the Netherlands international returns to Villarreal in the summer.

But as Son Heung-min being initially benched in our 2-0 win against West Ham United showed, there is a very high level of competition in our frontline. Perhaps Thuram won’t like it if he isn’t a regular feature in the starting XI of whichever club he joins next.

If that is the case, this is a deal we can avoid. Instead, the time and money can be spent elsewhere, such as signing a world-class central defender or a new goalkeeper.
