Paul Merson says Tottenham Hotspur could play a role in Graham Potter’s Chelsea sack
Graham Potter is having a horrid time at Chelsea, and they are now tasked with facing Tottenham Hotspur this weekend in the Premier League.
They have won a grand total of just one game in their last 10 matches across competitions. Spurs, meanwhile, are experiencing mixed form.
A 1-0 win against Manchester City was followed by losses against Leicester City and AC Milan. A 2-0 win against West Ham United last Sunday provided a much-needed result for us.
In derbies, nevertheless, form book rarely ever matters. It is about who wants it more and at times, the result can be down to sheer luck. With a huge London derby on the horizon, former Arsenal star Paul Merson has opined that the game against Spurs could define Potter’s future at Chelsea.
He wrote for Sky Sports:
“This Sunday is Chelsea’s biggest game of the season – it’s Tottenham. If he loses this one I’m not sure there is a way back because the fans will go ballistic. This game can change everything though – if Chelsea beat Spurs he can also be a hero.”
Chelsea have spent handsomely under new owner Todd Boehly. The American owners installed Potter as the club’s manager in early September after they surprisingly removed Thomas Tuchel from the helm.
It would be an embarrassing situation if they then sack Potter within the same season – a situation we Tottenham fans will revel in, make no mistake about that.
We have ourselves to focus on as we are still in the Premier League top-four race. We have to solidify our grip on the fourth spot. A win against Chelsea in north London will be perfect to do just that.

The Blues’ misery and Potter potentially being sacked will just be an added bonus for Spurs fans. But then again, given what is at stake, we cannot expect Chelsea to be timid here. We must prepare for this like a cup final.
